There are several methods of coating steel gates and railings which have their own
advantages and disadvantages.
The information on this page is designed to help you decide on the finish best suited
to your requirements.
Traditional Paint finishes are provided ‘In-house’, powder coating and hot-dip galvanizing
are carried out by specialist outside contractors.
Paint and powder coat finishes are available in a wide range of colours
Traditional Paint
A high quality primer/undercoat is applied and then covered in a gloss paint of your
choice.
Powder Coating
This involves coating the metal with coloured powders which are then baked onto the
surface, available in matt, satin and gloss finish. Provides a high quality, durable
finish.
Hot-dip Galvanized
The metal is dipped into molten zinc which provides a coating which is highly resistant
to corrosion. After galvanizing the metal can also be painted or powder coated, which
is the preferred method.
Painting gates and railings black is a tradition that dates back to the 19th century,
when all gates and railings were painted black as a sign of national mourning on
the death of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. Prior to this metalwork
was painted in a wide range of colours.
Why not stand out from the crowd by having your metalwork finished in a colour that
complements your home.
All paint and powder coat finishes are available in the full range of British Standard
colours (Click here to view).
White, green, brown and burgundy red are the favourite choices in alternative colours
to the ubiquitous black.

Recommended Finish
Hot dip galvanizing combined with powder coating.
This provides the maximum corrosion resistance and durability combined with decorative
quality.
Particularly useful for balconies in loft conversions, where accessibility for painting
would require expensive scaffolding.
Pros:
Problems of corrosion (rusting) virtually eliminated.
Cons:
Expensive to apply. Most paint finishes have the tendency to flake as they cannot
bond efficiently to the zinc surface.
Pros:
Relatively inexpensive to apply and to repair. Can be maintained without specialist
knowledge or equipment.
Cons:
More susceptible to damage, requires maintenance every couple of years.
Pros:
Extremely tough durable coating requires very little maintenance and keeps the quality
of finish for many years.
Cons:
Slightly more expensive to apply than paint. Minor damage may be repaired with a
good enamel paint, severe damage may require specialist repair.
